Before & After Using Saltwash
Saltwash is a texturizing powder that you can add to any paint to thicken it without changing the colour. It was the perfect medium to utilize on this sideboard that had broken molding and a rough, peeling top.
The first step was to give it a light, all-over sand to prepare the surface for paint, remove any loose bits and dirt. Followed by a vinegar-water wash, this ensures removal of any grease that may resist water based paint.
I decided to use Country Chic Paint’s All-in-One Lazy Linen mixed with Saltwash as a base coat. The All-in-One sticks to pretty much anything so it is a really good base. I liked the idea of the Lazy Linen popping through a top coat of blues and greens I envisioned for a final, beachy look. It isn’t as stark as a pure white but still a good contrast with the blues and greens.
You can mix a thick paste of Saltwash, like icing, but in this case I wanted just a fine layer of texture so I mixed it with the paint just enough that it was no longer runny. I then spread it all over the piece with a chippy brush in pretty abstract directions – channeling a coastal surf! I didn’t feel the wood had to be completely covered. In fact, a little wood peeking through in the final result suited the look I was after.
That was fun. Next I prepared a palette of 4 different blues and greens in the Fusion Mineral Paint: Champness, Laurentien, Renfrew Blue and Homestead along with Limestone. Using one brush I alternated between colours and painted the entire piece with wet over wet, blending the colours. Fusion is quite runny so it went over the texture very easily.
After drying, I lightly sanded all over to bring out the Lazy Linen under the blue/green cover. The light colour was raised with the Saltwash so it easily popped out through the colours creating an effect like surging water. I light wax of Clapham’s clear furniture wax using a lint free cloth (T-shirt material) gave the piece a soft lustre and makes it feel very soft rather than matte.
We named the piece ‘Botanical Beach’ as it reminds us of the tide pools.
